I was in my studio today doing some cleaning and came across this book that I made years ago. I thought to myself, of all the times I’ve moved -this is one thing I never get rid of because I just love it.

One of my favorite book crafts from years ago and I still bring it out ever year around spring time.

We’ve covered painted books before, but today I want to show you another way to decorate old books. It’s super simple to do! There’s zero painting involved and for the supplies… you more than likely already have these items around your house.

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

  • a hardcover book or journal

  • wired edge ribbon

  • artificial flowers, leaves, etc.

  • ornamental jewel piece (costume jewelry)

  • glue gun and glue sticks

  • scissors

Grab A Book And Let’s Decorate

The first step is to wrap your book with the ribbon like you would do for a gift box. Pull about two and half yards out from the roll and lay the book lengthwise on top of the ribbon near the middle. Make sure you have plenty of ribbon to work with. Pull both ends of the ribbon up and bring the right end over the left. Then pull width-wise so they crisscross.

Taking one end of the ribbon and wrap it under the book and back up to meet the cross section on top. Pull the ends to tighten it up and tie it here. We aren’t going to crisscross again on the bottom because we want it to lay completely flat.

Tie the ends of the ribbon on the top side of the book so the bottom side will lay flat.

Make a big bow right in the center. Grab your glue gun. Loop the ends in towards the center and glue them down to make a second bow. You want to have four big loops so that it’ll look nice and pretty all the way around.

if you want to preserve the book, you can use a pipe cleaner to tie these bows together instead of using hot glue.

Loop the ends of the ribbon and glue them down to complete the bow.

Grab your artificial flowers and leaves for this next step.

Begin adding in a few of the leaves. We don’t want them to lay flat, so use the glue to build up underneath to make them stand up. Before adding the rest of the leaves, position your flower and glue it to the center.

Build up the hot glue under the leaves to make them stand up.

Add in the remaining leaves. You can put as much or as little as you want into this arrangement. The key to remember when doing arrangements with leaves, is that you always want to have an odd number of them.

For the finishing touch, we’re going to add some bling. Glue your chosen piece of jewelry directly on top of the plastic area in the center of the flower.

Add a shiny piece of costume jewelry in the center of the flower.

Don’t you love it? This is such a beautiful project to do with old books. The whole thing can take you less than 10 minutes to complete and look at how gorgeous it is! I hope this book craft inspires you to create more.
